A Guide To Lab Created Diamonds
July 03 2025 – Kate Sutton

Lab-created Diamonds - A guide to the exciting innovations shaping the future of diamonds.
Our lab grown diamonds are grown from the ‘Seed’ of a natural diamond. They are grown in a lab by mimicking the pressure from the earth when a natural diamond is formed.
We use both GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and the IGI (International Gemological Institute- based in Antwerp) lab-grown diamonds.
The GIA has recently announced it will be moving away from the traditional 4Cs (colour, clarity, cut and carat weight) used for natural diamonds... instead, lab grown diamonds will be categorised as either “premium” or “standard” based on a combination of colour, clarity and finish. This is due to most lab-grown diamonds sitting in the higher quality D-F, VS+ range.
All lab grown diamonds that do not meet the minimum quality threshold wont get certification from the GIA - this means the quality we offer will always remain high.
So what does this mean for you?
Not much at all because at UbyKate, we exclusively use the highest quality lab-grown diamonds. Every bespoke piece crafted will include the “premium” lab-grown diamonds and all diamonds over half a carat will come with full certification from the GIA or IGI.
We understand that every client has their own preference when it comes to lab-grown vs natural diamonds. That’s why we offer both!
Our goal is simply to share knowledge and highlight the exciting innovations shaping the future of diamonds.
